Nelson Mandela would seem an unlikely figure to be at the focus of a sports movie. However, here he is played by Morgan Freeman in one of the most satisfying and inspiring movies that centers on a sporting event in a long time: Clint Eastwood’s Invictus. It helps when said sporting event does not just offer redemption for its characters, but is also the turning point in a nation’s history.

In 1994, after being imprisoned for twenty-seven years for his anti-apartheid political activism, Nelson Mandela was elected the first post-apartheid president of South Africa. In 1995 he decided that the best way to unite the nation just might be through the universal power of sports. Mandela enlisted the help of Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), captain of the controversially all-white South African rugby team, to lead the underdog Springboks to a victory in the Rugby World Cup. Out of this thrilling story of competition, inspiration and leadership comes Invictus.

Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman, who both garnered Oscars for their last collaboration as director and actor (Million Dollar Baby) are joined by Matt Damon in this true story based on John Carlin’s book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Changed a Nation. Eastwood and screenwriter Anthony Peckham met with Carlin, who was a long-time political and sports journalist in South Africa and a friend of President Mandela, in order to adapt the story to the screen as truthfully as possible. Instead of utilizing a sound stage in Hollywood or location in Vancouver as many productions do, Eastwood decided to film in Cape Town, South Africa. ( You can watch Invictus Online ). To add even more authenticity to the project, the team brought in Chester Williams, a star on the 1995 championship rugby team, to train Matt Damon personally.

With an all-star cast, a director whose work behind the camera is quickly eclipsing his legendary acting career and a true story that could not have been made up in the best of Hollywood brainstorming sessions, Invictus easily scores as one of the most entertaining and impacting movies of the year.
